 নিমাইয়ের প্রতিভাতে সকলেই চমকিত। ছাত্রাবস্থায়ই তিনি ন্যায়ের একখানা প্রধান গ্রন্থের উপর একটি টীকা লিখিতে আরম্ভ করিলেন। কথাপ্রসঙ্গেও একদিন জনৈক মেধাবী সহপাঠীকে তাহা কিছু পড়িয়া শুনাইলেন। শুনিতে শুনিতে এই সহপাঠীর অশ্রু ঝরিতে লাগিল। দেখিয়া নিমাইয়ের বিস্ময়ের সীমা রহিল না। নিমাই তাঁহাকে সান্ত্বনা দিয়া বারংবার ইহার কারণ জিজ্ঞাসা করিলে তাঁহার ভালোবাসায় মুগ্ধ সহপাঠী বলিলেন, "ভাই, বহু পরিশ্রম করিয়া আমি ওই গ্রন্থের একখানি টীকা লিখিয়াছি। কিন্তু তোমার লেখা শুনিয়া মনে হইল, তোমার গ্রন্থ সম্পূর্ণ হইলে আমার গ্রন্থ কেহ পাঠ করিবে না।" সহপাঠীর দুঃখের কারণ শুনিয়া নিমাই হাসিতে হাসিতে সেই মুহূর্তেই টীকাটি গঙ্গার জলে ফেলিয়া দিলেন।
