 মুসলমান শাসকগণের মধ্যে আকবর যে শ্রেষ্ঠ ছিলেন সে বিষয়ে কোনো সন্দেহ নাই। তিনি ধর্ম বিষয়ে অত্যন্ত উদার' ছিলেন, তাই বলতেন- ভারতবর্ষ একা হিন্দুর নয় বা মুসলমানের নয়, ভারতবর্ষ উভয়ের। হিন্দুমুসলমানের মধ্যে সকল বিভেদ দূর করার জন্য তিনি আজীবন চেষ্টা করেছিলেন, তিনি বলতেন-সকল ধর্মের মধ্যেই সত্য নিহিত আছে। তাঁর উদার নীতি ও সুশাসনের ফলেই হিন্দুমুসলমানকে তিনি এক করতে পেরেছিলেন। তিনি নিজে লেখাপড়া জানতেন না, কিন্তু জ্ঞানী ও গুণীর আদর করতেন। তাঁর সভায় বহু জ্ঞানী-গুণী লোক ছিলেন।
