 একবার বর্ধমান স্টেশনে বিদ্যাসাগর মহাশয়ের সহিত এক ভিক্ষুক বালকের সাক্ষাৎ হয়। বালকটি তাঁহার নিকট একটি পয়সা চাহিলে তিনি বলিলেন, "মনে কর, আমি তোমাকে পয়সা দিব।" "তামাসা করিবেন না' মহাশয়।" " আমি তামাসা করিতেছি না। আচ্ছা, আমি তোমাকে চারিটি পয়সা দিলে তুমি কি করিবে ?" "দুই পয়সার খাবার কিনিব, আর বাকি পয়সা মাকে দিব।"" আর যদি দুই আনা দিই।” এই কথায় বালকটি চলিয়া যাইতে উদ্যত হইলে বিদ্যাসাগর তাহার হাত ধরিয়া বলিলেন, "বল না। অশ্রুপূর্ণলোচনেও বালক উত্তর করিল, "চার পয়সার চাল কিনিব, আর বাকি পয়সা মায়ের জন্য রাখিব।"
