 হর্ষবর্ধন অতিশয় দানশীল রাজা ছিলেন, নানাবিধ পুণ্যকার্যে তিনি যথেষ্ট অর্থ ব্যয় করিতেন। তিনি প্রতি পাঁচ বৎসর অন্তর একটি মেলা বসাইতেন এবং পাঁচ বৎসরের সঞ্চিত সমস্ত ধন মেলায় বিলাইয়া দিতেন। সাধু ও পণ্ডিতগণ জাতিধর্মনির্বিশেষে তাঁহার দান পাইতেন। তাঁহার সময়ে বিদ্যাচর্চার নিমিত্ত বিহারের নালন্দা নামক স্থানে বহু অর্থ ব্যয়ে একটি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় স্থাপিত হয়। নালন্দায় প্রায় দশ সহস্র ছাত্র ও অধ্যাপক বাস করিতেন। শীলভদ্র নামক এক বাঙালি বৌদ্ধ ওই বিদ্যালয়ের অধ্যক্ষ ছিলেন।
