 শিখসম্প্রদায়ের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা মহাত্মা নানক ১৮৬৯ খ্রিস্টাব্দে পাঞ্জাবে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তিনি জাতিতে ক্ষত্রিয়। অতি শৈশবকাল হইতেই তিনি ধর্মপ্রাণ ও পরোপকারী ছিলেন। তাঁহার পিতার আর্থিক অবস্থা সচ্ছল ছিল না। তিনি নানককে বাল্যকাল হইতেই অর্থোপার্জনের চেষ্টা করিতে উপদেশ দিতেন। কিন্তু নানক দেশে দেশে ঘুরিয়া বহু সাধুসন্ন্যাসীর সহিত মিশিলেন ও নানা শাস্ত্র পাঠ করিলেন। এই সমস্ত আলোচনার ফলে তিনি বুঝিলেন ঈশ্বর এক।
