 অবশেষে একদিন সত্যই বাঘ আসিয়া তাহার পালের গোরু আক্রমণ করিল। তখন রাখাল নিতান্ত ব্যাকুল হইয়াও 'বাঘ' 'বাঘ' বলিয়া উচ্চৈঃস্বরে বারবার চিৎকার করিতে লাগিল। কিন্তু সেদিন একটি প্রাণীও তাহার সাহায্যার্থে উপস্থিত হইল না। সকলেই মনে করিতে লাগিল, ধূর্ত রাখাল আগেকার মতো মিথ্যা চিৎকার করিতেছে। বাঘ ইচ্ছামতোও পালের গোরু বধ করিল এবং অবশেষে রাখালের প্রাণসংহার করিয়া চলিয়া গেল। নির্বোধ রাখাল এই বলিয়া প্রাণত্যাগ করিল, "মিথ্যাবাদীরা সত্য বলিলেও কেহ তাহাদিগকে বিশ্বাস করে না।"
