 স্বামী বিবেকানন্দ বিশ্বাস করিতেন যে প্রত্যেক মানুষের মধ্যেই ভগবান আছেন। কাজেই মানুষের সেবাই ভগবানকে ভক্তি দেখাইবার শ্রেষ্ঠ উপায়। এই শিক্ষা তিনি রামকৃষ্ণদেবের নিকট লাভ করিয়াছিলেন। হিন্দু, মুসলমান, জৈন, খ্রিস্টান রামকৃষ্ণদেবের নিকট সমান ছিল। তিনি ব্রাহ্মণ-শূদ্র ভেদ করিতেন না। সকল মানুষই তাঁহার প্রিয় ছিল। মানুষের দুঃখকষ্ট তিনি সহ্য করিতে পারিতেন না। একবার কোনো গ্রামে তিনি দেখিতে পাইলেন যে অন্নাভাবে লোকে বড়ো কষ্ট পাইতেছে। মথুরবাবুকে তিনি বলিলেন, "উহাদের কষ্ট নিবারণ করো, মথুর- উহাদিগকে অন্ন দাও, উহারাই তো ভগবান।"
