 আমার (রবীন্দ্রনাথ) বয়স তখন সাত আট বছরের বেশি হইবে না। আমার এক ভাগিনেয় শ্রীযুক্ত জ্যোতিঃপ্রকাশ আমার চেয়ে বেশ একটু বড়ো। আমার মতো শিশুকে কবিতা লেখাইবার জন্য তাহার হঠাৎ কেন যে উৎসাহ হইল বলিতে পারি না। একদিন দুপুরবেলা তাহার ঘরে ডাকিয়া লইয়া বলিলেন, "তোমাকে পদ্য লিখিতে হইবে।" পদ্য জিনিসটাকে এপর্যন্ত ছাপার বইতেই দেখিয়াছি। এই পদ্য যে নিজে চেষ্টা করিয়া লেখা যাইতে পারে, একথা কল্পনা করিতেও সাহস হইত না।
