 একলব্য ব্যাধরাজ হিরণ্যধনুর পুত্র। ছেলেবেলা হইতেই তাহার অস্ত্রবিদ্যা শিক্ষা করিবার প্রবল ইচ্ছা ছিল। সে সময় দ্রোণাচার্যের যশ বহুদূরে ছড়াইয়া পড়িয়াছিল। লোকে বলিত যে তাঁহার ন্যায় বীর সমগ্র ভারতে আর নাই। একলব্যের বড়ই ইচ্ছা হইল যে দ্রোণের নিকট অস্ত্রবিদ্যা শিখিবে। একদিন একলব্য দ্রোণাচার্যের শিষ্য হইবার আশায় তাঁহার নিকট গমন করিল। কিন্তু দ্রোণ ব্যাধপুত্রের গুরু হইতে স্বীকৃত হইলেন না। তখন একলব্য ভগ্নহৃদয়ে সেই স্থান ত্যাগ করিয়া গভীর বনে প্রবেশ করিল। সেখানে একটি কুটির নির্মাণ করিল এবং দ্রোণের একটি প্রতিমূর্তি গড়িয়া তাহার সম্মুখে একাগ্রচিত্তে অস্ত্রবিদ্যা অভ্যাস করিতে লাগিল।

Ekalabya was the son of Hiranyadhanu, the king of fowlers. He had strong desire since his childhood on archery. The fame of Guru Dronacharya spread then far and wide. Men said that no other hero was so great as he throughout India. Ekalabya desired earnestly to learn archery before him. So one day he went to him to be his disciple. But Drona disagreed to be his tutor. At this Ekalabya, with broken heart left that place and entered into the dense forest. He built a cottage there and forming a statue of him started practising archery with undivided attention.
