 খ্রিস্টীয় একাদশ শতাব্দীর শেষভাগে বল্লাল সেনের সময়ে বঙ্গদেশের রাজগৌরব চতুর্দিকে বহুদূর পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত হইয়াছিল'। বর্তমান বাংলাদেশ ও পশ্চিম বাংলার অধিকাংশ স্থান এবং বিহার ও উড়িষ্যার কতকাংশ তাঁহার রাজ্যভুক্ত ছিল। বিক্রমপুরের অন্তর্গত রামপালে তাঁহার রাজধানী ছিল। কিন্তু গঙ্গাতীরে বাস করিবার জন্য তিনি নবদ্বীপে রাজপ্রাসাদ, সভামণ্ডপ, পারিষদবর্গের বাসস্থান প্রভৃতি নির্মাণ করাইয়া ক্রমে উহাকে বৈভবশালী' দ্বিতীয় রাজধানীতে পরিণত করেন। শেষজীবনে তিনি অধিকাংশ সময় নবদ্বীপেই বাস করিতেন। তাহার ফলে দেশ বিদেশের বহু বিদ্বান, বুদ্ধিমান, গুণবান ব্যক্তি নবদ্বীপে সমবেত হওয়ায় নবদ্বীপ বিদ্যাচর্চার কেন্দ্ররূপে পরিণত হয়।
