অস্ট্রেলিয়া মহাদেশের নাম তোমরা নিশ্চয় শুনিয়া থাকিবে। এই দেশ আবিষ্কারের সঙ্গে কাপ্তেন কুকের নাম অমর হইয়া আছে। ইংলন্ডের একটি ছোটো গ্রামে ১২৭৮ খ্রিস্টাব্দে জেমস কুক যখন জন্মগ্রহণ করেন তখন কেহ ভাবিতেও? পারেন নাই যে এই শিশু পৃথিবীর মধ্যে একজন দুঃসাহসিক নাবিকরূপে পরিচিত হইবেন। কুকের পিতা কৃষক ছিলেন। ছেলেবেলায় কুকের লেখাপড়া তেমন কিছুই হয় নাই। গ্রাম্যবিদ্যালয়ে মোটামুটি লিখিতে, পড়িতে ও সহজ অঙ্ক কবিতে শিখিয়াছিলেন ।
