এক কৃপণের কিছু সম্পত্তি ছিল। সর্বদা তাহার এই ভয় হইত পাছে কোনো চোর বা ডাকাত তাহা লইয়া যায়। এজন্য সে স্থির করিল এমন একটি ব্যবস্থা করা দরকার। যাহাতে কেহ তাহার অর্থের সন্ধান না পায় ও চুরি করিতে না পারে। অবশেষে সে সর্বস্ব বেচিয়া ফেলিল, এবং এক তাল সোনা কিনিয়া মাটিতে পুতিয়া রাখিল। কিন্তু এরূপ করিয়া সে নিশ্চিন্ত হইতে পারিল না। প্রতিদিন সে গোপনে একবার সেই স্থানে গিয়া দেখিয়া আসিত সোনা আছে কি না।
