Alarming Rise In Cyber Fraud: Elderly Man Duped Of ₹5 Lakhs

 -By a Special Correspondent

Kolkata, December 24: Cybercrime incidents are witnessing an alarming spike in the city, with a 65-year-old retired school teacher becoming the latest victim of a 'Digital Arrest' scam yesterday. The victim, a resident of Salt Lake, lost ₹5 lakhs from his savings account.

Police reports state that the victim received a video call from a person posing as a CBI officer. The fraudster claimed that a parcel containing illegal items had been booked in the victim's name. Threatened with immediate arrest, the panicked senior citizen was manipulated into transferring the money to a "verification account" to avoid legal action. The fraud came to light when the victim contacted the local police station later that evening.

The Cyber Crime Cell of Kolkata Police has registered a case and traced the IP address to a neighboring state. "These scammers are using psychological fear to trap educated individuals," said a senior police official. The police have issued a fresh advisory urging citizens not to entertain video calls from unknown numbers and to remember that law enforcement agencies never ask for money transfers online for investigation.
